Step 1: Carefully Open the Box
Open the box using a knife to carefully slice the sealing tape without damaging the box itself. Do not throw away the box! You are going to ship the samples in it…
Step 2: Label all collection containers
Step 3: Wash hands and put on clean latex gloves
Wash hands and forearms thoroughly in warm water and soap all the way up to the elbows. Dry off with a clean towel and put on latex gloves. You can spray alcohol or other sanitizer on the gloves
Step 4: Take a Sample form a Fermenter or Bright Tank
Start by sanitizing the valve: First make sure the valve is clean and free of debris. Then see below depending on valve type.
For a dedicated sampling valve: Fill valve with 70% alcohol and briefly flame to burn off the alcohol.
For a standard valve: Attach a 90 degree elbow to the valve so that it can be filled with sanitizer (i.e. PAA or similar). Let the valve soak for 5-10’ and then remove the elbow and attach a sanitized barb for sample collection.
Collect the sample: Run off liquid for 5 seconds to flush sanitizer. Collect 20-30 ml into sterile tube provided by holding the tube 0.5 to 1” below the barb or valve without touching the tube or anything else. Firmly tighten the cap after filling.
Sample packaged beer: Open bottle/can in a clean, dry location. Flame the lip of the container thoroughly. Pour off approximately ½ the beer to a waste container. Gently swirl the remaining beer to resuspend any settled yeast/microbes. Carefully pour 20-30 ml into a sample tube. Firmly tighten the cap after filling.
Sample a surface: Carefully remove the sterile swab from its tube by touching only the end of the wooden stick. Firmly swab over an area of 4 square inches. Drop the swab back in the sterile tube cotton side down without touching the swab tip or the lip of the tube. Firmly tighten the cap.
Step 5: Seal Tube With Parafilm
Seal each filled tube with a strip of Parafilm (included). First make sure the cap is tight. Then remove the paper backing from Parafilm and stretch the film to wrap 2-3 times around area where the cap meets the tube. This is important to ensure a leak proof seal during shipping. Return each tube to its own bag.
Step 6: Package and Ship
Seal each tube in its own bag and return to the box they were shipped in. Make sure all tubes are labeled and bags/tubes are sealed properly. Seal the box with packing tape, place return shipping label over original shipping label and deliver to any fed ex driver or location.
